Let's be real here for a minute.
I never thought in a million years that I'd be the kind of daredevil to strap into a stunt plane, launch into the skies, and pull loop-de-loops over Las Vegas…
Let alone *actually* steering the flight controls myself, or maneuvering a half-a-million-dollar stunt plane through a full-throttle airshow routine.
I have no idea what got into me that day, but let me tell you - I've never been the same since.
Have you ever done something so bold, so brazen, that it not only pushed up against every boundary in your comfort zone - but challenged everything you knew to be possible in this world?
It sounded bananas. And at the time, I thought maybe I’d gone bananas for agreeing to try it out.
But now, looking back, I never could have predicted what a profound impact this single, life-affirming experience could have had on the trajectory of my entire future.
This is my Sky Combat Ace story.
Don't get me wrong: It had been a fun Vegas trip. From stuffing ourselves silly at the amazing buffets, to bursting into rapturous applause at the encore of every show.
We'd shopped up a storm, filled our suitcases to the brim, splashed around at the pool parties, and explored every hotel up and down the Strip.
We'd been dazzled and delighted by the crazy Vegas spectacles at every turn. We were thoroughly entertained.
And honestly, we thought we'd done everything…
That is, until the second last day before we were due to leave, when one of my friends said, “How about we try Sky Combat Ace?”
Just between you and me - I still remember the bolt of terror that shot through my belly at the mere suggestion of such a wild activity. I mean, was this even possible?!
In a moment of extreme bravado, I shoved down my knee-jerk reaction to shout “no way!” and remembered that everything we ever want in life exists on the other side of fear. If we're gonna end this trip with a bang, we might as well go big or go home.
See, I'd never managed to conquer my fears enough to go skydiving, but surely this would be less scary because I'd stay safely inside the plane the whole time, right?
Besides, everyone's gone skydiving - but who could actually say they've done aerobatics like you see on TV in the Red Bull Air Races? Or even flown a plane themselves?
This was something else.
When else would we get the chance to experience anything remotely as amazing as this?
So it was decided. The very next morning, we'd be picked up from our hotel and whisked off to play stunt pilot for the day. (I'm still getting goosebumps remembering that feeling, all these years later…)
Not gonna lie, breakfast was the last thing on my mind that morning. We'd been instructed to eat something light before our flight, but I was so giddy with anticipation that my stomach was full of butterflies.
After a long staring contest with a bagel and cup of coffee, I realized I may be the most nervous customer ever to walk through the doors at the SCA hangar.
Perhaps I was most worried about looking like a complete wuss in front of those badass pilots. Surely, a few jitters were normal before doing something so adrenaline-pumping?
Suddenly, I remembered that my pilot would happily dial down the intensity if I wasn't feeling so daring once we were airborne - It was just the boost of assurance I needed to not completely chicken out. Luckily, my friends were all riding a high of excitement, so I was confident it would all be worth it.
Before the SCA driver arrived to pick us up, there was just enough time to give myself a quick pep talk in the bathroom mirror, and I got my game face on.
Rolling up to the Sky Combat Ace hangar was a truly surreal experience. Instead of being greeted by a stuffy aviation facility, we stepped into what I can only describe as the most mind-blowing fighter pilot clubhouse imaginable.
As we signed in and geared up in fighter pilot suits, we kept catching glimpses of the hangar through the reception area door as it swung open, revealing a hive of adrenaline-fueled activity and eye-popping sights.
It was like peeking through a portal to another dimension - the roar of distant engines, the smell of aviation fuel hanging heavy in the air. The sleek, high-octane stunt planes bursting into the hangar with theatrical flair, careening in sideways and coming to a precise stop.
As their canopies opened, grinning passengers in the front seat whooped triumphantly, high-fiving their pilot as they climbed out of the cockpit.

My nerves shifted to excitement as I realized this would soon be us - giddy from the high of pulling off something we'd never dreamed possible. My heart skipped a beat. It was as if my whole body knew something insane was about to go down.
As our pilots poured into the reception lounge to greet us, it was clear how meticulous this whole operation was. The entire crew had this perfect mix of total professionalism and "we're about to have the time of our lives" energy. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face.
These guys welcomed us with the kind of calm confidence that makes you think, "Okay, maybe I'm not going to completely embarrass myself up there."

Next up was the pre-flight briefing. Sitting in that room felt like being inducted into an elite fighter pilot squadron, handed a top-secret mission dossier.
Our lead pilot - a seasoned aviator and retired F-16 fighter pilot named "Tex" - breaks down what we're about to do in a way that makes aerobatic maneuvers sound as casual as parallel parking. The guy's got more air time than I've spent watching Netflix, and somehow that made everything feel... possible?
"So we're gonna take this incredible machine," he says, spinning a little model plane in his hands, "and basically turn the sky into our playground." When he demonstrated the loops and rolls we'd be doing, my stomach did a somersault. But his confidence was contagious. This wasn't some rehearsed safety spiel - this was a pro letting you in on the secrets of their craft.
He didn't just rattle off safety protocols; he emphasized them in a way that felt reassuring rather than daunting. "Remember, you're in control of how intense this gets. If you want to dial it back or crank it up, just say the word," he assured us.
By the end of the briefing, a new feeling settled in—not just anticipation, but a readiness. The jitters were still there, but now they were the kind that make you feel alive.
Listen, nothing - and I mean NOTHING - prepares you for that moment when you first climb into the cockpit. It's like strapping into the world's most insane roller coaster, except YOU get to drive the thing. The instrument panel looked like something out of Star Wars, but Tex broke it down so simply that even my adrenaline-soaked brain could follow along.
That first takeoff? Pure magic. As we ascend, I'm overcome by the sheer magnitude of sensory input washing over me - speed, altitude, and just pure freedom. Suddenly as the horizon expanded, all those everyday worries seemed to shrink.
Seeing Vegas sprawled out below us like some glittering miniature city, it was like seeing the familiar through a completely different lens. Talk about an insane metaphor for how new experiences broaden horizons and shift your perspective. For a moment, I totally forgot to be scared... and it felt AMAZING.
Just when I'm thinking
"this view is insane," Tex drops the question that changed everything:
"Ready to see what this baby can really do?"
What happened next is still burned into my memory like a crazy fever dream. One second we're cruising steady, the next - BOOM - we're pulling this perfect aileron roll and suddenly the whole world's turning upside down.
It felt surprisingly smooth and effortless, but it was still a totally disorienting experience - defying gravity, pushing the limits of what felt possible. I let out a whoop of pure joy - a raw expression of relief, excitement, and a touch of disbelief. I'd conquered that first hurdle, and I was ready for more.
The wild part? After that first maneuver, something clicked. Each new move - the loops, the hammerheads, even the heart-pounding tailslide - felt less like "Woah, that sounds crazy" and more like "Woah, I'm actually doing this!" My brain couldn't process that I was pulling off the same moves I'd seen in airshows. Me. The person who gets nervous on ferris wheels.
After demonstrating each aerobatic maneuver, my pilot handed over the flight stick and it was my turn to give them a shot. Tentatively at first, I took control of the plane and felt just how responsive this thing really was. It handled like butter - with even the slightest input on the controls, we'd be pivoting on our own axis, or suddenly soaring vertically to the heavens. I could see why these incredible aircraft were considered the world's most advanced stunt planes - I felt like I was flying a rocket.
All the while, we flew alongside my friend in another plane, who was pulling off the same stunts with their instructor pilot guiding them through. We'd take turns putting on a private air show for each other, heckling and hollering to each other over the radio about how awesome this was. Despite being sky-high, we were totally floored by how much fun we were having.
For the grand finale of the aerobatic profile, Tex took over flying to show me some advanced stunts, which included maneuvers like an inverted flat spin, and a mind-bending Lomcevak tumble. (Translation: This crazy maneuver is about the closest you'll ever come to experiencing controlled chaos!)
The G-forces pressed me into my seat, but instead of fear, I felt an incredible rush. It was as if all my senses had been dialed up to eleven. The combination of speed, skill, and sheer audacity was unlike anything I'd ever experienced.

Just when I thought it couldn't get more surreal, Tex drops this casual bomb: "Ready to try some dogfighting?"
Did he seriously just ask if I wanted to engage in a mockup of air-to-air combat? Like some kind of fighter pilot? Heck. Yes.
We met up with the other plane piloted by my friend and their instructor, and the game was on. Suddenly we were fighter pilots preparing for battle in an all-out air war, and seeing the other plane dart through the sky ahead of us lit up something primal in my brain. Over the radio, mission control delivered our orders and we were locked in for our first mock dogfight engagement.
Under Tex's guidance, I was actually working the controls, banking and rolling, trying to get this perfect position on their tail. We chased, evaded, and strategized. It was like the most incredible game of laser tag I've ever experienced - that feeling of piloting that aircraft, even with expert supervision, was empowering beyond words.
The best part? When I managed to "outmaneuver" my friend, lining him up perfectly in our sights and pulling the trigger. Over the radio crackled a whoop of defeat, "We're hit!" followed by a dramatic pop of air show smoke as his plane took a tumble through the sky, signaling that I was the winner for this round.
We climbed back up to altitude for the next engagement, and duked it out until a champion was crowned. Not meaning to brag, but that victory was sweeter than any casino win.
With the dogfighting behind us, I thought the adrenaline rush had peaked. Boy, was I wrong.
On the way back to base, there was one more adventure left before we'd completed our fighter pilot mission: Carry out an air strike on a simulated enemy target, buried in a secret underground bunker in the rugged desert landscape.
Tex's voice boomed through the headset: "Ready for the next phase? We're going low and fast. Time to sneak up on the enemy." We swooped down to just 10 feet above the desert floor, the ground blurring beneath us as we weaved through canyons, hugging the terrain to avoid enemy radar detection. It felt like we were defying the laws of physics.
"Control, this is Ace One, checking in," Tex radioed to mission control, slipping back into his F-16 pilot persona as if his last Air Force combat mission was only yesterday.
The response was immediate:
"Proceed to target coordinates. Enemy SA-5 missile site detected. Engage and neutralize."
We zoomed through a tactical low-level approach, reacting to simulated threats like ground-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery. My heart was pounding as the landscape became a high-stakes obstacle course, every rise and fall of the terrain a new challenge.
"Target in sight," Tex announced. "Dropping bombs in 5, 4, 3..." My finger hovered over the trigger as we lined up for the low-angle attack. "Steady... now! Bombs away!" I squeezed the trigger, releasing our simulated 2,000lb payload...
For a moment, there was silence. Then, a plume of smoke erupted over the target area. "Direct hit!" Tex cheered.
As we pulled up, leaving the target behind, I couldn't help but laugh. This wasn't a video game or a daydream - it was the real deal. The combination of high-speed flight, tactical maneuvering, and the sheer wildness of the mission had me feeling like I'd just starred in an action movie.
"Welcome to the big leagues," Tex said with a grin in his voice. As we headed back toward the hangar, cruising above the desert with the sun beginning to dip in the sky, I knew this was an adventure I'd be talking about for the rest of my life.
Touching down smoothly, I felt a mix of achievement and a tinge of sadness that it was over... But most surprising of all, was the moment my feet touched solid ground. Suddenly, I heard some strange words tumble out of my mouth before I could even realize what was happening:
"Book me in again same time tomorrow."
I don't know who looked more taken aback - my friends who had been teasing me all morning for being such a nervous wreck, or myself. The only one of us who wasn't surprised was my pilot. With a knowing look of recognition, he gave me a nod, as if he totally "got it".
This is me and my pup Pocketwolf
As I peeled off my flight suit, the sense of accomplishment remained like a second skin. Needless to say, I was hooked.
